Avril Cottage and gardens is nestled on 1/3 of an acre in a small hamlet on the Canadian prairies. It was acquired by the author in 2022 before which time it had received meticulous clinical care via traditional management principles.

Now, with the aim of creating a biodiverse, self-sustaining garden by applying simple permaculture principles over time, the garden has already undergone massive transformations, including the addition of raised areas, deciduous trees, a small orchard, and perennial bushes and shrubs, all of which support soil enhancement and environmental biodiversity. The work continues.

The cottage proper was built in 1979, with an addition and renovations added later. It is south southwest facing with a metal roof and overhang, which means the summer sun is high enough to keep the interior dark and cool, and the winter sun is low enough to tumble into the main living rooms, keeping areas warm and spirits bright. There is a full foundation, but no basement to heat.

The home runs on central heating via natural gas. A stove has been added to the main living area as an additional source for when the power goes down in the winter months, which it sometimes does.

Winter temperatures have been known to drop below -50C.

Summers offer a short but intense growing season. Potager gardens have so far produced enough vegetables and herbs to last about half the year, and plans are constantly evolving to expand and diversity for greater yields.

Much is put up into wines, meads, pickles, sauces, jams, and herbal remedies.

Winter provides a time for rest and quieter pursuits. Knitting, spinning, weaving, woodworking, and other creative projects occupy time and hands until spring cycles itself around again.
